Kastrup Søbad-Seaside bath by the White Architect

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

My idea was to achieve a sculptural, dynamic form that can be seen from the land, from the sea and from the air,” says Fredrik Pettersson(the architect of this projec) . “The silhouette changes as the spectator moves around it.”
The aim was to use the shape to build in functions such as changing, sunbathing and bathing areas in a simple design that compares favourably with the wide expanse of the sea.

A clear concept that is also faces the beach in a welcoming manner. This is nothing private or exclusive, rather a facility open to everyone, regardless of age, physical mobility or needs. Bathing is not compulsory, even thought it looks inviting.

Visual Complexity

Friday, September 26, 2008

VisualComplexity.com intends to be a unified resource space for anyone interested in the visualization of complex networks. The project's main goal is to leverage a critical understanding of different visualization methods, across a series of disciplines, as diverse as Biology, Social Networks or the World Wide Web. I truly hope this space can inspire, motivate and enlighten any person doing research on this field. (quote from Visual Complexity)

Some of the projects

Art of the cities, art of the fields

"I Wish was inspired as I considered the balance between work and play in our lives. I wonder if we have become a nation of people who are slaves to the very technology that was meant to ease workloads rather than increase responsibilities and prolong work hours. Research carried out by the TUC highlights as a nation we are working extra hours for our employers for free. Using this information as a starting point, I set about to find out what people wishes were so they could use this time given to their employers and hopefully use this time to give something back to themselves.
Using my MA work in progress show, I invited people to stop, reflect, and ask themselves what they really wished for in their lives. Were their wishes realistic? Could they act on them? Presented in the form of a poster are all the wishes that were collected. Looking into the idea of the six steps of separation and how our wishes are constantly evolving, using colour to represent the notion of going from one step to another. Each wish is categorized by the one word, which expresses the individual's desire. The words are placed in the layout alphabetically and with each person assigned a number in the middle circle. Then using a system of linking the number to the wish word illustrating the human link between many of us and the common desires we strive for in our wishes and in our lives."

very interesting house with the use of openings to make a small house bigger

Parasite architecture

The Rucksack house started as an art object, created by the sculptor Stefan Eberstadt, but investors saw the commercial opportunity of the 9 sq m box and transformed it into a house extension, as a cheaper and faster alternative to usual extensions.

As mobile as a rucksack, this mini-house is intended to be an additional room that can be suspended from the façade of any residential building.

AADRLTEN Pavilion competition

Winning projects by Alan Dempsey (DRL 2002) and Alvin Huang (DRL 2004 )

The goal of this competition is to design a small pavilion (no bigger than 10m W x 10m L x 5m H) that offers spatial experiences to DRL TEN visitors as well as passers-by on Bedford Square. The pavilion will be manufactured professionally and will be assembled by a building contractor with assistance of DRL Phase 1 students during the second and third weeks of February 2008. Similar to many pavilions designed for expos and event spaces, the DRL TEN pavilion will be a temporary, small-scale building project, developed as a prototype for a new kind of architecture. The winning design will be developed immediately after its selection with the assistance of the London engineering firm Adams Kara Taylor and DRL staff at the Architectural Association

Finalists

The design of the pavilion should explore:
1) the thinness of fibre-reinforced concrete panels and their structural potential
2) the possibility of achieving non-standard forms either by using flat panels in inventive ways or by developing a smart and efficient means to produce 3D curved panels
3) the use of panellised materials to create a coherent structural system

JALAN GAMBIER MARKET IN KUCHING WILL BE GONE SOON

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

the vegetable market

KUCHING: The former site of the Gambier Street Market here that used to house hundreds of hawkers until June 15 will be turned into an esplanade as part of the Kuching Waterfront extension.

The development will also cover the adjoining area which stretched up to Ban Hock Wharf.
Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, in disclosing this Friday night, envisioned the esplanade having lots of trees to provide the much needed shade on sunny days apart from making the city a greener and better place to live in.

the vegetable market

“I’ve just asked Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) to prepare the plan,” he told reporters after officiating at the city hall’s 20th anniversary dinner.

Once completed, he said, the esplanade would stretch from Hilton Kuching to Ban Hock Wharf, adding that the opposite side of the river would also be developed and beautified to make both sides a popular recreational spot for city dwellers as well as visitors.

(QUOTE FROM MY SARAWAK )

the fish market

I heard that DBKU has decided to tear down the stretch of markets along Jalan Gambier and it was announced in the newspaper on Sunday.

What a sad news to have, the immediate thought come to my mind is What kuching will become later?
Is it will developed into some place like Singapore?

the fish market

If the buildings are demolished, Kuching will be an empty town without any identity, a city with high rise commercial buildings but without soul. It is a very sad scene to our future generations.

If you never being to the Gambier Market, try to visit them, you can tel a lot of old times stories of Kuching from the buildings.

Currently some of us are involving in the measure drawing of the markets and I wonder whether conservation can help to protect these buildings on time.

Tirana Rocks: MVRDV Wins Lakeside Competition in Albania

Monday, September 15, 2008

Rotterdam, The Netherlands—The city of Tirana and an international jury announced MVRDV winner of the competition for the urban masterplan creating a new dense urban neighborhood with a park and public facilities at the shore of Tirana Lake, in the south of the Albanian capital.

The stacked and twisted volumes create spectacular public spaces and provide dramatic vistas. Clad in local stones the buildings turn into a series of ‘rocks’, the ‘Tirana Rocks’.
