Graduation im showcase 09 of New Era College Art & Design Department

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

Date : 30 DEC 08 ~ 13 JAN 09
Venue: UG Hall Block. C New Era College
Time: 9am to 6 pm Daily

The graduation (im concept):
Visual Communication: I’m a light Bulb
We use a light bulb to represent Visual Communication as it connotes ‘inspiration’. When we are inspired, the light bulb shines. The light bulb is a great invention, it is very important in our life, and can change the world. The light bulb also stands for vision, enabling aesthetic appreciation.

Interior Architecture: I’m a Magic Box
It is wonderful to design a surprising and intricate creation from a common ‘box’. Different styles, designs, forms and structures are found in Interior Architecture but they are derived from a box. In this field, there is no right or wrong, it only considers whether a design is effective or functionary.

Visual Art: I’m a Palette
A palette does not have much function for everyone; it is not a daily consumer item. But for Visual Art ists, its function and meaning is huge big. In their world, colors feed imagination, exploration and creation. Paint colors on the palette can transform the world around us.

Textile&Fashion: I’m a Mannequin
The mannequin represents fashion design. When we see a mannequin, we think of fashion design. In this field, fashion designers not only need to know about design, they also need to know the nuances of gender and constitution of people to design a costume which has its own distinctive style.

Paris Landmark- Competition design

Sunday, December 21, 2008

Competition for Paris 2012 Olympic Landmark.Project by GEORGE KATODRYTIS / STUDIONOVA: PARIS LANDMARK, 2004:

Advancements in digital simulation enable designers to produce the required results instantly, projecting (Leon Battista Alberti) and mirroring (Jacques Lacan) the future as desire and fear. The world had once been represented through the Albertian frame of perspective or Lacan’s mirror stage theory, which positions the child within a physical and familial space.
The more recent dynamic interpretations of the explosive space of the Futurists, the plastic compositions of the Constructivists, and Modernist model of the open plan, are now replaced by the methods and means of designing through simulation and virtuality.
This creates a new condition: an introverted kind of space, which is deformed rather than expandable, reflective rather than solid, transparent and fluid rather than edited. Though it is interactive, it represents physical isolation and tends toward tele-socialization. (Paul Virilio)

PARIS LANDMARK
A proposal for a landmark in Paris, made with galvanized stainless steel. Genetic algorithms and programming scripts were used to generate the skin lattice that on one hand appears random but on another it follows a very strict and precise geometry of an envelope.
A perforated metal skin defines another enclosure that contains a spiral ramp leading to the top, at the viewing platform and just as this great ascensional dream, released from it’s utilitarian prop, is finally what remains in the countless Babels represented by the painters, as if the function of art were to reveal the profound uselessness of objects, just so the (Eiffel) Tower, almost immediately disengaged from scientific considerations which had authorized its birth (it matters very little here that the Tower should be in fact useful), has arisen from great human dream in which movable and infinite meanings are mingled: it has reconquered the basic uselessness which makes it live in men’s imagination.

From Roland Barthes, The Eiffel Tower and Other Mythologies, (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York, 1979)

Four X 4 Reconnecting with nature by ndL

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Four x 4 is conceived as a suburban tree house, the idea of this timber structure comes from the abstraction of nature in multiple level.
From far, it looks like trees of different level. The structure is formed by 4 x 4 inch pressure treated timber with multiple openings provided for different views towards the site.
Four x 4 can be a play scape for both children and adults , where they can venture into different openings, walk up using the ramps and staircase to another space.
Interesting way of timber construction details and very playful design.
This design remind me of my information visitors center (second year project), my ideas are taken from the forest, however this group project turn out to be a failure due to undeveloped ideas and the functionality of the whole structure. Quite disappointed with it as I really like this project a lot, but gradually i understand where is my weakness.

Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), Finland

The Temppeliaukio Kirkko or known as the Rock Church is designed by architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. It was completed in year 1969 after the current lot for the church had being empty for 50 years plus. The church is a combination of both natural rocky setting with man made features. The 24 diameter dome, supported by concrete struts, protudes slightly above the grade. Light penetrates into the church from the glazing between the dome and the natural(quarry stone walls) .
Interior of the church
The church is built of blocks of natural granite in the middle of an ordinary residential square, From the outside, an irregular wall of rubble seem protecting the church.
