Korea exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2002

The design of the columbarium, a repository for 50,000 remains, placed within walled courtyards, is characterized by dignity, repose and connection to nature. The buildings are long and thin creating short aisles perpendicular to the primary circulation offering visitors both variety and continuous directional paths.

The configuration ensures direct views to the valley and privacy from the primary circulation. The design accomodates as many as 30,000 daily visitors and provides for diverse observations of mourning and rememberance.

Zhong Xian Pavilion

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Treehouse In A Concrete Jungle: Architect Sergio Palleroni and Taipei students break through asphalt to create a garden and green office space.
The 3,000-square-foot pavilion is basically one large room, with an open loft over the southern portion. In form and materials, it is a showcase for passive cooling and low-energy lighting. Above the steel stilts, the lightweight metal-stud structure rises 32 feet above ground to catch any available breezes.
The pavilion’s wall construction also contributes to the cooling strategy. The materials are low in mass to prevent heat buildup.

Akron Art Museum by Coop Himmelblau

Friday, March 14, 2008

COOP HIMMELB(L)AU believes that art should flow out of the building and the city should flow inside. Rather than going to the museum simply to look at art, visitors are encouraged to engage in artistic discourse, attend music and arts festivals, or simply to pass the time. This belief led the firm to divide its addition to the Akron Art Museum into three parts: a “Crystal,” a “Gallery Box,” and a “Roof Cloud.”

Faithful to the principle of mutual respect between neighbours, and in accordance with the Law on the Horizontal Property System contained in Civil Code, co-owners are called to approve the installation, provided that the provisions of the internal regime agreement signed by the different representatives of the community of neighbours are met.

The construction concerned is of the light sort, built with non-masonry materials and reversible. It is constructed with wooden floor frames, a steel structure and light doors and windows, never using bricks. The entire system enables the apartment to be reversible and disassembled without causing any damage to the structure of the building, a fundamental point to bear in mind in meeting the requirements of the Civil Code on movable goods.
