HISTORY OF DARUL KURNIA

DARUL KURNIA WAS BUILT BY ABANG HJ ABDILLAH BIN DATU BANDAR ABANG HJ KASSIM FOR RESIDENTIAL PURPOSES IN 1930 . IT WAS ONLY REGISTERED UNDER THE NAME OF DATU PATINGGI ABANG HJ ABDILLAH ON 15TH SEPTEMBER, 1947.

THIS BUILDING IS LOCATED AT HAJI TAHA ROAD AND TJE LAND IT STANDS COVERS 1.98 ACRES.DATU PATINGGI DIED ON 21ST NOVEMBER, 1946 AND THE PROPERTY WAS INHERITED BY HIS FIVE GRANDDAUGHTERS.

IN APRIL 1948, THE COURT ORDERED THE LAND TO BE RETURNED TO THE ESTATE OF DATU PATINGGI ABANG HJ ABDILLAH AND WAS LATER MANAGED BY HIS ELDEST GRANDSON. IN JUNE 1949,

THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A CHINESE NAMED MR ONG KWAN HIN FOR $30,000.00 AND THE BUILDING WAS ONCE USED AS THE OFFICE FOR CHINA EMBASSTOR.
IN 1972, IT WAS HANDED OVER TO THE SARAWAK CHINESE COMMUNITY CHARITABLE TRUST BOARD WHO THEN RENTED TO CHUNG HUA SCHOOL ADMINISRATION FOR $100.00 A MONTH UNTIL YEAR 2002.

CURRENTLY, DARUL KURNIA IS OFFICIALY THE PREMISES OF CHUNG HUA MIDDLE SCHOOL NO 4. (RESOURCE TAKEN FROM SARAWAK MUSEUM, 1995, HISTORICAL BUILDINGS, MONUMENTS AND SITES IN SARAWAK)

My idea was to achieve a sculptural, dynamic form that can be seen from the land, from the sea and from the air,” says Fredrik Pettersson(the architect of this projec) . “The silhouette changes as the spectator moves around it.”
The aim was to use the shape to build in functions such as changing, sunbathing and bathing areas in a simple design that compares favourably with the wide expanse of the sea.

A clear concept that is also faces the beach in a welcoming manner. This is nothing private or exclusive, rather a facility open to everyone, regardless of age, physical mobility or needs. Bathing is not compulsory, even thought it looks inviting.

I wish

"I Wish was inspired as I considered the balance between work and play in our lives. I wonder if we have become a nation of people who are slaves to the very technology that was meant to ease workloads rather than increase responsibilities and prolong work hours. Research carried out by the TUC highlights as a nation we are working extra hours for our employers for free. Using this information as a starting point, I set about to find out what people wishes were so they could use this time given to their employers and hopefully use this time to give something back to themselves.
Using my MA work in progress show, I invited people to stop, reflect, and ask themselves what they really wished for in their lives. Were their wishes realistic? Could they act on them? Presented in the form of a poster are all the wishes that were collected. Looking into the idea of the six steps of separation and how our wishes are constantly evolving, using colour to represent the notion of going from one step to another. Each wish is categorized by the one word, which expresses the individual's desire. The words are placed in the layout alphabetically and with each person assigned a number in the middle circle. Then using a system of linking the number to the wish word illustrating the human link between many of us and the common desires we strive for in our wishes and in our lives."

The Rucksack house started as an art object, created by the sculptor Stefan Eberstadt, but investors saw the commercial opportunity of the 9 sq m box and transformed it into a house extension, as a cheaper and faster alternative to usual extensions.
