YTL Residence, Kuala Lumpur by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

YTL residence which was completed almost end of year 2008 designed by Paris-based Agence Jouin Manku.

The 3000 square meters residence is to house 3 generations of family and also functions to entertain the guests. There are 9 bedrooms, 2 family rooms, a family kitchen, a private dining, a family library, game room, public reception area, formal dining room, ballroom, chapel, bathrooms, swimming pool and guests suites.
The main challenges of the designer is to segregate public and private functions within the house.
The curve staircase design becomes a feature of the house , it looks like a shell from above and its color is striking to the eye.
The concept consists of three layers: the base for public functions, the ring for guests and the private house for the family. (quote from coolhunter.com)
Most of the spaces have high ceilings, large windows and mostly are combination of white color and natural wood.
YTL Design Group of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the architect of record. The Agence Jouin Manku design team included Patrick Jouin, Sanjit Manku, Yann Brossier (architect), Richard Perron (designer). Officina del Paesaggio from Lugano, Switzerland was in charge of the landscape design, and L’Observatoire, New York, USA handled the lighting. - Tuija Seipell

Eighth International Student Design Competition 2010: A Memorial to a Memorable Event

Eighth International Student Design Competition 2010: A Memorial to a Memorable Event organized by CAA
Introduction
Competitors are invited to make proposals for a memorial commemorating a significant past event in their own country, or the country in which they are studying.
The event should be real and worthy of remembrance. It could be a political, sporting, cultural or historical event such as a famous speech, a battle, a protest march, sporting success, disaster, human migration, musical performance, act of bravery, revolution, strike……Certain events in history help to shape a society’s identity.
Significant events, like warsand revolutions are frequently marked with memorials and monuments, which can become cultural points of reference for that society. But many past events go unmarked and unremembered, and lose their significance.
Competitors are asked to identify such an event in their own country, for which a worthy memorial does not already exist and to submit designs for a building that will make manifest the memory.
The competition jury will be interested in ideas that explore the nature of a memorial in contemporary society and how current concerns such as environmental, social and economic sustainability, might be accommodated in its design. The memorial should be placed on a real site appropriate to the memorable event.

It will serve two purposes:
  • to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the memory of the event;
  • to provide accommodation to house and display relevant memorabilia/interpretive material for public access and information.

The memorial might be designed as a single artefact, being a building that acts as both memorial and visitor centre; or it could be designed as a free-standing memorial set adjacent to a building accommodating material relevant to the memorable event.Solutions relying heavily on landscape would also be welcome.

Competitors are asked to consider:

  • an appropriate way to commemorate an event that is perhaps strong in the memory or significant in the history of a region, but for which there may little or no evidence in the location in which it took place;
  • an approach to designing with reference to a past event, which contemporary and long-lasting relevance.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all students, worldwide, who at the time of preparing their submission are registered at a Higher Education Institution. It is not limited to those studying in Commonwealth Countries. Individual and group entries are acceptable.Entries from multi-disciplinary groups are welcome. Post graduate research students and higher degree students are not eligible to take part.

Suitcase House hotel by Gary Chang, The Edge

Monday, March 16, 2009

"Casting a question mark on the proverbial image of the house, Suitcase House Hotel attempts to rethink the nature of intimacy, privacy, spontaneity and flexibility. It is a simple demonstration of the desire for ultimate adaptability, in pursuit of a proscenium for infinite scenarios, a plane of sensual (p)leisure."Suitcase house is designed by Gary Chang, from the Edge (H.K) lmt.
The house is located at the head of the Nangou Valley near the Great Wall at Badaling, North of Beijing. This house demostrated a flexibillity and mobility of space usage and furnitures during different time per day. Different timber sliding partitions /blinds forms the vertical layers for the wall and divides the interior spaces. The house although is only 250 square meters, manage to accomodate most of the amenities.
The levelling of the houses are metaphor as earth strata.
"The dwelling represents a stacking of strata. The bottom stratum acts as a container for domestic fittings and equipment, services and maids' quarters. It also fulfills the requirements for storage. Compartments are concealed by a landscape of floor panels, which when raised, give access to the world below. The top stratum houses a series of blinds that may be raised or lowered to subdivide the space. Similarly, the building envelope is a stratification of vertical layers. ""( quote from Arspace) "The outer skin is a wrap of full height double-glazed folding doors while the inner layer is comprised of a series of screens forming a matrix of openings. The abstract façade pattern is thereby rooted in its user-oriented operational logic. Together, these strata give form to the zone in between. "( quote from Arspace)

New FRITZ HANSEN showroom

Sunday, March 1, 2009

Fritz Hansen Showroom display historical Danish brand of contemporary design in a 3 levels showroom total of 340 square meters.

Stefano Tagliacarne, the architect who designed this showroom trying to potray the company philosophy through the showroom design.
Therefore, the showroom missions not only to exhibit the collections of Danish brand, but also to express the Danish culture value in relation to Italian context.
The displays in the showroom become the main actor of the exhibition space and less decoration is use throughout the whole floors.
3 different floors from the basement until the first floor is varied in space area and shape. Linkage between all floors become the main feature in this design. Tagliacarne use a big red column and a wood clad wall , connecting from basement to the first floor.
The wood clad wall is an exhibition stage for the Series 7 chairs designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955. The light concrete stairways besides the wood clad wall create an interesting picture to the whole showroom.
The natural rough materials used become a contrast to the display finished furnitures in the showroom. Info and Images from architonic
