Brides
Review by Margaret Pomeranz

Opening the Greek Film Festival this year was a film called Brides. It’s about a ship full of women from many areas in Eastern Europe who are travelling to America to an unknown destiny in 1922.Centre to the story is Niki from the island of Samothrace played so subtely and beautifully by Victoria Haralabidou who is replacing her younger sister as a bride for a tailor in Chicago.
She’s a seamstress and on board the ship she meets photographer Norman Harris, (Damian Lewis), who’s returning to his home country after failing as a war correspondent in Turkey.
But this film is about the many women who leave their home country either willingly or unwillingly and the traps into which many may fall.
This melodrama and I love melodramas is really beautifully performed, it’s heartfelt and tense and romantic. Steve Berkoff plays a Georgian who is actually preying on these women for his own nefarious business. He could have been grotesque, he is in fact, but he’s believable.
p/s: a good movie with the understanding of different country culture n poverty, but the length of movie should be more tense!! a little bit boring!!
the acting of the NIKI n her luv to NORMAN seems not really there yet!! but it is a good story as well!!
ppl cant choose the thing they like as there are alot of things need to be considered each time. NIKI cant be with NORMAN at the end as she choose to keep her promise n marry to a strangers.
So, if u got chance to choose, n u have choose the best, it is really good n great n appreciate wat u have!!!
COZ NO EVERYONE CAN CHOOSE!!

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

She constructs her works with such elements as bodily fluids, reptiles, insects, and old, concrete buildings. Her works are audaciously enlarged and printed by heavy-duty printers, not only onto papers but also onto leather and plastic surfaces, giving her works the sense of transcendence of both art and illustration.

City of Biscuits
At Selfridges in London. In the work of Chinese artist Song Dong, thousands of biscuits and sweets are being used to create an edible city. After completion it will be, well, eaten. The work is meant to criticize the (cookie-cutter?) sameness of Asia's new cities, the confectionary quality of their showpiece buildings?

if worry a lot ur family lagi worry u cos they worry u cant afford to face the pressure, let them feel u are able to do better...dun bother troubling just go ahead

fifteen restless nights

Fifteen Restless Nights
15 Restless Nights is an image/text/sound collaborative art installation of a map-like journey across the night-time landscape of Canada.
Fifteen large-scale, high-resolution images of individual unmade beds, reconstructed from photographs gathered over nights spent in motel rooms across Canada, will be reproduced on vinyl geotrans, and realized as black and white electro-microscopic images incorporating text fragments based on individual anonymous experiences men and women have had in motel rooms across Canada.
An original jazz piece based on the theme of long night highways between cities will be integrated with the fragmented telling of fifteen original texts, recorded as spoken word in French and English.

2. Jacks in Australia and New Zealand

today crit and the last group work

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Again, today crit by lecturers again.
The process seem very fast, she only wan to know about ideas.
today the indonesia ppl come to our studio to visit us, it seem surprise to see them, but our students explain to them wat actually is going on in the studio third year.
I feel very unhappy last few days, maybe too disappointed with the site model.
It actually is a group work of thing, but it ends like nobody cares about it.
When ask other group members to come to help as well, they oways use excuses to escape. It seems very disappointed to see the group work become like this. Nobody even want to ask about it..............
The next day, moving the site model to the studio, again, i saw nobody wants to giving a hand to it......What is the problems to the group? i suddenly feel dat everyone dun k dun k character very annoying. But, i understood dat, it is the model leader problems as well, he dint even want to take the responsibility at all. Why our group become like this?
A simple task in the class let me see more clearly that: There are thousand of faces in the class, everybody holds one, patient in everyting no only in architecture, but in the relationship with others as well, be patient on everyhting.................

Pedestrian Levitation

Saturday, August 12, 2006

The creation of the work is based on the movement of pedestrians on a pedestrian crossing in public space. Some pedestrians walk only on the sidewalk and use the pedestrian crossing for crossing the street, other pedestrians freely make shortcuts on the formally imposed trafic situation.

Pedestrian Levitation.net is an artwork in public space that reflects on this movement. It visualises the real movement of people, and adds a virtual movement based on the assumption that the mind of people is not subject to gravity or any other physical limitations.Irregular white triangles are applied on the sidewalk- for the real movement, and up onto a high empty wall for the virtual movement.

The work creates a graphical layer above existing architecture that acts as a interface towards movement of thought. The work flows from the pavement up to the wall of a building or buildings. It creates a visual motion: when you walk into the work, your visual senses are pulled to the directions of the triangles.

KENZO KUMA

Z58 Shanghai

Camron has just been appointed by the Zhongtai, China’s leading lighting specialists, to handle international media relations for the opening of its new Shanghai headquarters designed by acclaimed Japanese Architect Kengo Kuma.
This is an exciting project for Camron and is our first client in the region. The four story building in the historical French Concession is an oasis of calm in the frenetic hustle of high rise Shanghai and is despite its small size a world class building.
In keeping with Kengo Kuma’s architectural philosophy the building is an exercise in subtlety. Adapting the existing building, a 19 Century Watch factory, Kengo Kuma has created a real dialogue between the building and its surroundings. The building will house an exhibition and cultural space on the first floor, with ever changing exhibitions and events. A lighting showroom and offices occupy the second and third floors.
However, it is the top floor that will truly amaze. Amongst a landscape of moving water sit two beautifully appointed rooms by Kengo Kuma. Add to that, a gym, library, wine cellar, a cigar bar and a 24 hour concierge and you have a unique travel experience. These rooms are available to those travellers in search of something truly memorable from November.
